LEE CHONG WEI
Datuk Lee Chong Wei (born 21 October 1982 in Bagan Serai, Perak and he is a professional badminton player from Malaysia who resides in Bukit Mertajam. As a singles player, Lee was ranked first worldwide for 199 consecutive weeks from 21 August 2008 to 14 June 2012. He is the third Malaysian men's singles shuttler after Rashid Sidek and Roslin Hashim to achieve such a ranking (since official rankings were first kept in the 1980s), and is the only Malaysian shuttler to hold the ranking for more than two weeks.
Lee is a silver medalist in both the 2012 Olympic Games and 2008 Olympic Games, thus becoming the first Malaysian to reach the final of the men's singles event and ending Malaysia's Olympic medal drought since the 1996 Games. This achievement also earned him the title Datuk, and a description by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak as a national hero. He repeated the achievement four years later in London, thus making him the most successful Malaysian Olympian in history.
Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif
Mohd Zakry Abdul Latiff played representing Malaysia in men doubles badminton. He is from Negeri Sembilan,Malaysia and have participating in various tournaments since 2003 until now. The new achievement that he has acquire with his pair is winning the Chinese Taipei Open GP by winning a gold medal. He is currently the best pair Malaysia badminton has ever have since now.
His love for badminton led him to invest in a full-cement court outside his home (an expensive rarity at the time) and implemented a strict training regime for his sons since their childhood. Years later he would see his dream fulfilled as his sons all played for the country at the international stage. The fairytale-esque story of a father’s dream realized by his sons led to the Sidek brothers’ story to be immortalized in the Anak-anak Sidek comics
Malaysia has long produced many world class players and has consistently challenged for international honors since before it even achieved independence. The Thomas Cup, considered to be the biggest and most prestigious badminton event internationally, has only ever seen three winning countries since its first edition in 1949 — Malaysia, Indonesia and China.
In the 27-edition history of the Cup, Malaysia (Malaya as it was then) won the first three editions and at the moment has totaled five victories. Between 1949 and 1982 Malaysia has reached the final seven times out of 12.After 1982, Malaysia has only failed to reach at least the semi-finals five times in 15 editions.
With such consistency on a global stage, it follows that the nation has also birthed top players on a consistent basis, from 1940s world-beater Datuk Punch Gunalan to Lee Chong Wei.
